Description
A comforting family favorite, this dish features tender pork shoulder slow-braised with sweet apples and aromatic garlic, perfect for gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 lbs pork shoulder
- 4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 4 cloves fresh garlic
- 1 large onion (sweet or yellow)
- 2 sprigs fresh thyme or rosemary
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth, or apple cider
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare your ingredients by peeling and slicing the apples and garlic.
- In a heavy pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Season the pork shoulder with salt and pepper, then sear it on all sides until golden brown.
- Remove the pork and set aside. In the same pot, sauté the onions, apples, and garlic until the onions are translucent and apples start to soften.
- Return the pork to the pot, add the herbs and pour in the broth or cider until it comes halfway up the pork. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cover and cook in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 3 to 4 hours, or until the pork is fork-tender.
- Let the pork rest, shred or slice it, and serve with the apples and garlic, drizzled with the braising liquid.
- Pair the dish with creamy mashed potatoes or a simple green salad.
Notes
Allow the pork to rest after braising to ensure moistness. Avoid rushing the cooking process for best results.
