Description
A whimsical and flavorful family recipe for Halloween, featuring skull-shaped buns and juicy burgers.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast (active dry or instant)
- 2 tablespoons sugar (or honey)
- 1 cup milk (any type, including plant-based)
- 1/4 cup butter (or coconut oil)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 pound ground beef, turkey, or plant-based protein
- Fresh herbs (like thyme and parsley)
- 2 cloves garlic (fresh or dried)
- 1 cup sautéed mushrooms
- 1 cup cheese (sharp cheddar or your choice)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and yeast, letting it sit for about five minutes until bubbly. In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt, and then slowly fold in the yeast mixture and melted butter. Knead until smooth.
- Let It Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and allow it to rise for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Buns: After rising, punch the dough down and divide it into equal pieces. Roll them into skull shapes, using cookie cutters if necessary.
- Second Rise: Let the shaped buns rise again for about 30 minutes on a baking sheet covered with a cloth. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake: Brush the tops with an egg wash or milk, then bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.
- Mix the Patty Ingredients: Combine the ground meat or veggie mix in a bowl with herbs, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into patties.
- Cook to Perfection: Sauté the patties in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked, adding sautéed mushrooms atop each patty before adding cheese.
- Assemble: Place the patty inside your skull-shaped bun and serve with your favorite toppings.
Notes
Feel free to swap ingredients to accommodate dietary preferences. For a vegetarian option, use a mushroom patty.
