Description
A rich and indulgent chocolate layer cake with creamy buttercream frosting, perfect for Halloween or any festive occasion.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup unsalted butter (for buttercream)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–4 tbsp heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your cake pans with butter and lightly dust with flour.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In another bowl, beat the granulated sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy.
- Add the milk and vegetable oil to the egg mixture, then gradually fold in the dry ingredients.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Once baked, cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before turning them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the buttercream, beat the unsalted butter until soft, gradually add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until light and fluffy.
- Once cooled, layer and frost the cake with buttercream, and decorate as desired for Halloween.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy!
Notes
Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Cake can be frozen for up to three months.
