Description
A comforting recipe for warm, buttery homemade soft pretzels with a unique salty-sweet flavor profile.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
- 1 packet yeast (active dry or instant)
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 4 tablespoons melted butter (or olive oil)
- Coarse salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until bubbly, about 5-10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, roughly 5-7 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, dividing it into equal sections. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel by twisting the ends together.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and stir in baking soda. Gently drop the shaped pretzels into the boiling solution for about 30 seconds, then remove and drain on paper towels.
- Place the pretzels on a lined baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let them cool slightly before serving.
