Description

A comforting recipe for Classic Swedish Meatballs served in a creamy Dijon gravy, perfect for family gatherings and special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for dairy-free)
  • 1 minced onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp butter (for browning)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp flour (for thickening gravy)
  • Fresh parsley or chives (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, minced onion, heavy cream, egg, and spices. Mix gently to avoid tough meatballs.
  2. Wet your hands slightly and roll the mixture into balls about one inch in diameter.
  3. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides for about 5-7 minutes. They don’t have to be fully cooked through.
  4. Add more butter, sauté sliced onions until translucent, then sprinkle in flour and whisk gradually with beef broth and cream, followed by Dijon and seasonings. Let it thicken.
  5. Return browned meatballs to the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the gravy for an additional 10 minutes.
  6. Serve on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes or alongside sautéed vegetables.

Notes

For a lighter option, use turkey meat. Pair with lingonberry sauce and a side salad.
