Description
A comforting dessert made with day-old bread soaked in a rich custard and drizzled with warm caramel sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 cups day-old bread (brioche, croissants, or a crusty loaf)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- For Caramel Sauce: 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Tear or cut day-old bread into bite-sized pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, milk, cream, and vanilla. Add cinnamon and nutmeg if desired.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread and gently stir until every piece is soaked. Let sit for 15-30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Transfer soaked bread mixture into a greased baking dish and bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and custard is set.
- Meanwhile, prepare caramel sauce by combining sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until it simmers and turns amber. Remove from heat, add butter and cream, whisking until smooth.
- Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with warm caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using brown sugar or adding a splash of bourbon to the caramel sauce.
